Phil Swanston lives and works in Old Oxted, where he is well known as the downstairs bar manager in the popular Crown Inn.
On the 5th of June 2010 Phil started the mammoth challenge of cycling 5,000 miles: The entire coastline of mainland Britain. Phil is doing this in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Phil’s mother was diagnosed with this cruel disease over six years ago and he has experienced first hand the devastating effects this disease has on its victims, their families and carers.
To meet the task, Phil will be covering an average of 65 miles per day for three months, solo and unsupported.
The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia. The money raised will go towards the Society’s stated aims of giving support to sufferers and their carer’s and the search for a cure.
Phil hopes to raise in excess of £20,000 over the course of his journey. He is looking for sponsorship help from both individuals and local companies.
To keep costs down, Phil is also trying to find accommodation on his trip. Should anyone know of friends or family living on, or near the coast, who could possibly provide a night’s accommodation, it would be very much appreciated.
700,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia; more than half have Alzheimer’s disease. In less than 20 years nearly a million people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051.
Alzheimer’s Society campaigns for and champions the rights of people living with dementia and the millions who care for them. Alzheimer’s Society works in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Alzheimer Scotland helps people with dementia, their carer's and families. Members include carers, relatives, and people with dementia, professionals, groups and organisations. As a lot of Phil's route is around Scotland he is making provision for them in the donations.
